EVA Wins SKYTRAX 5-Star Airline Certification Eighth Year in a Row

Keeps passenger care, attention to detail, innovation as priorities

EVA Air has once again earned SKYTRAX’s 5-Star Airline certification. Only 10 airlines in the world have been awarded 5-Star certifications and EVA is the only one in Taiwan to receive the distinction. It’s an honor the airline has merited for eight consecutive years, starting in 2016. It again confirms the strength of EVA’s service quality. Information about EVA services, fares and routes, in addition to booking and buying options, is available at www.evaair.com.

“Reaching the highest bar to win 5-Stars in SKYTRAX’s annual airline audits for eight years in a row is both an honor and the best affirmation we could receive of the good and hard work all our employees perform every day. It motivates us to continuously improve our services,” said EVA President Clay Sun. “We’ve had the goal to be the world’s best service airline since 1989 when EVA was established and that has not changed. We will not lose our focus on improving and innovating or introducing more personalized services.”

SKYTRAX is a world-renowned aviation research authority that awards airlines one-to-five stars annually after comprehensive evaluations and professional analyses of quality standards for close to 350 airlines around the globe. Categories considered include airport services, seat comfort, inflight service supplies, cabin comfort, catering, in-flight entertainment, cabin crew services and more. These star designations have served as important reference points for airline passengers. In addition to EVA, the other nine airlines to receive the highest 5-Star honors for 2023 include Singapore Airlines, All Nippon Airways, Japan Airlines, Korean Air, Asiana Airlines, Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific, Hainan Airlines and Garuda Indonesia.

During nearly a month of close SKYTRAX inspections, approximately 800 functions on or related to EVA flights throughout Europe, the United States, Northeast Asia and Southeast Asia, including the full range of services on the official website, digital services, airport services, inflight services, cabin comfort and more were scrutinized. Inspectors reviewed Economy, Premium Economy and Royal Laurel Classes separately, starting at the airport counters and drilling down to examine details such as cabin-interior cleaning. SKYTRAX inspectors relentlessly pursued their tasks to ensure that each detail of airline service represents the highest standards of 5-Star certification.

EVA’s entire staff upholds the highest standards. In their 2023 analyses, SKYTRAX inspectors highlighted EVA’s smooth boarding order, inflight services, flight attendant service skills, inflight tableware and inflight entertainment system. They singled out cabin cleanliness, amenity kits, cabin safety and seat comfort in EVA’s Boeing-787 Royal Laurel Class as standouts.

The pandemic forced EVA to adjust the limited operations that were possible to strike a balance between epidemic prevention and service quality. It employed the latest   technology to accelerate digital conveniences such as automatic check-in and electronic onboard reading materials such as newspapers and magazines. At the same time, it focused on continuously improved services, launching new inflight cuisines created in collaboration with Michelin-starred Chef Nakamura, Chef Paul Lee and Ching-Biao Huang, the gourmet Chinese food celebrity chef. It also introduced award-winning inflight beverages, featuring “Simple Kaffa” by World Barista Champion Berg Wu and VWI from World Brewers Cup Champion Chad Wang. As global tourism regains pre-pandemic momentum, EVA plans to be prepared to consistently offer Five-Star Airline services throughout its operations.

EVA Orders Five More Boeing 787-9s

Also adding Premium Economy Class to current two-cabin configuration

EVA Air ordered five more Boeing 787-9s following approval by its board of directors on March 13, 2023. The deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2025 and be completed in 2027. And, starting in mid-2024, EVA will update and reconfigure its 787-9s to add its popular Premium Economy Class to the Royal Laurel and Economy options now available on the aircraft. Inclusion of this latest 787 order will increase the number of B787s in EVA’s fleet to a total of 26, 13 B787-9s and 13 B787-10s. More information about EVA’s fleet and cabin services, in addition to its routes and booking choices, is available at www.evaair.com.

“We will put our new Boeing 787-9s to work on long-haul routes to Europe and North America. The introduction of Premium Economy on these aircraft will meet growing operational needs and make our flights even more attractive to passengers,” said EVA President Clay Sun. “We will continue to offer two cabin choices on our Boeing 787-10s and use them for flights within Asia and to Oceania.”

Boeing designed its 787 Dreamliners with lighter composite construction, using materials such as carbon fiber. More than 50% of the aircraft’s total weight comes from these kinds of advanced materials, significantly reducing the aircraft’s overall weight and likelihood of metal fatigue or corrosion, lowering maintenance costs. By choosing to use advanced GEnx engines, EVA is also shrinking fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by 25%, compared to the power systems used on traditional wide-body aircraft. These high fuel efficiencies combined with range capabilities equip EVA to further enhance operational performances and passenger services.

Boeing equips its 787s with advanced air filtration system that improve cabin air. It constructs the fuselage with a combination of composite materials that make it more airtight. The cabin humidity equipment Boeing uses on the 787s can be adjusted three-to-four times higher, making the inflight atmosphere less drying compared to other aircraft. Boeing also designed its 787s so that cabin pressure can be controlled to a degree that causes altitude to feel like the optimal 6,000 ft. instead of the standard 8,000 ft., reducing headaches and fatigue.

EVA operates a fleet of 85 aircraft, consisting of 77 passenger and eight cargo aircraft. An additional four Boeing 787-9s, seven Boeing 787-10s and one Boeing 777F from previous orders are scheduled to be delivered before 2025.

Due to the global impact of COVID-19, the number of international flights and passengers fell dramatically, leading SKYTRAX to suspend its annual World Airline Awards in 2020. This year, SKYTRAX conducted its annual airline survey online and extended its questionnaire availability from September 2019 through July 2021 and invited travelers to evaluate their airline experiences over an 18-month period. Throughout the pandemic, EVA has worked hard to maintain basic services to most of its major destinations and adjusted ground and inflight operations to balance COVID-19 prevention measures with its trademark high-quality service.

“We are grateful for all of the support passengers from around the world continue to give us,” said EVA President Clay Sun. “Even as COVID-19 has changed the way people travel, we have not stopped working to identify and develop new and better ways to give our passengers the safest, most comfortable and enjoyable flying experiences possible. We have tested Affinidi, AOKpass and IATA Travel Pass and have not stopped evaluating other digital health verification platforms. With these and other leading-edge services, we are determined to offer the best, most passenger-friendly paperless, zero-contact airport environment available. Our COVID-19 prevention measures are already recognized among the world’s best and we have been awarded for these protocols by global rating organizations. Every bit of positive recognition we receive is encouragement for the hard work of everyone at EVA.”

When the COVID-19 pandemic started, EVA began to evolve, introducing new features to make air travel more convenient for passengers, save them time at the airport and minimize personal contacts. It initiated automated online check-in and re-engineered boarding order to eliminate congestion at gates and onboard as passengers stow luggage and settle into their seats. It is also working with Affinidi, AOKpass and IATA Travel Pass to pilot programs that use apps to capture and verify passengers’ health credentials and PCR test results. EVA Among AirlineRatings’ World’s Best Airlines 2021

While 2020 and the first half of 2021 have had catastrophic effects on the global air travel industry, EVA Air has again proven itself to be one of the World’s Best Airlines, ranking 9th in AirlineRatings.com’s annual recognition of excellence. The honor follows EVA’s distinction in January as 6th in the influential ratings website’s World’s Safest Airlines for 2021 and placement among the World’s Top-20 COVID-19 Compliant Airlines where carriers are listed alphabetically. Additional information about the awards and rating criteria is available at www.AirlineRatings.com and the most up-to-date EVA route, service and COVID safety practices are detailed at www.evaair.com.

In its overview of the “World’s Top 20 Airlines for 2021,” AirlineRatings said, “EVA Air is a leader in Taiwanese aviation and has always been at the forefront of cabin innovation such as premium economy in 1992.”
AirlineRatings.com regularly monitors and evaluates more than 435 airlines, subjecting them to rigorous scrutiny and rating them based on a system of one-to-seven stars. Data reviewed includes audits from aviation’s governing bodies, lead associations and the airlines’ own safety data. Additional criteria include fleet age, audited passenger reviews and product offerings. The team of global editors also considered airlines’ Covid-19 responses and, instead of releasing the annual ratings in November as they typically do, held off to see how carriers handled the pandemic over a period of time. Though profitability is also a significant factor in its annual rankings, AirlineRatings did not consider finances this year because almost all airlines have been losing money.

EVA is continuing to improve its services and operations, exploring new passenger conveniences such as digital passports and biometric boarding, upgrading its fleet and adapting inflight amenities to meet health safety needs as it simultaneously aims to consistently give passengers top-quality inflight experiences. It upholds rigorous COVID-19 prevention standards and, in addition to gaining AirlineRatings’ “Seven Star Certification for COVID-19 Epidemic Prevention” and ranking in the “World’s Top Twenty COVID-19 Compliant Airlines,” it won World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) certification with a SafeTravels stamp and officially became a member of the international safe travel reception service chain. EVA consistently leads the industry in flight safety, service and innovation and wins accolades, honors and recognition from prestigious aviation authorities year after year.
