EVA in AirlineRatings’ Top 20 World’s Best Airlines for 2022

As countries reopen to visitors and global travel resumes, EVA Air has again earned a spot among AirlineRatings’ World’s Top 20 Best Airlines, ranking 8th. In January, the influential online product, safety and COVID-19 protections site recognized EVA in 9th place in the World’s Safest Airlines for 2022. More information about the ratings site and its awards can be found at www.airlineratings.com.

“EVA Air has always been at the forefront of cabin innovation, starting with its premium economy in 1992,” said AirlineRatings Editor-in-Chief Geoffrey Thomas. “EVA Air continues to deliver a top-quality product and service and is a standout airline.”

EVA has been busy during COVID lockdowns, finding ways to enhance and improve the airline travel experience for its passengers. To speed up airport processes and reduce person-to-person contacts, it created new check-in counter graphics in bright, easy-to-recognize colors and streamlined services from online booking and seat/meal selection to automated conveniences such as check-in. It has also been piloting a boarding system using biometrics with facial recognition. Earlier this year, it introduced the EVA e-Library, giving passengers more inflight reading choices, creating more convenient and comfortable flying experiences and eliminating a significant amount of newspaper and magazine waste. It continues to seek, evaluate and implement actions to help achieve its commitment to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

AirlineRatings.com regularly monitors and assesses more than 385 airlines, rigorously scrutinizing and rating them based on a system of one-to-seven stars. Data reviewed through its Awards of Excellence evaluation process includes age of a carrier’s fleet, audited passenger reviews and product offerings. Editors also considered airlines’ Covid-19 responses, safety practices and profitability.
EVA will continue to improve services and operations, identify new passenger comforts and conveniences, upgrade its fleet and adapt inflight amenities to meet the highest health safety standards. With quality service and safety as its consistent goal, EVA aims to always give passengers the best possible inflight experiences.

EVA to Launch Nonstop Milan, Munich Flights

Airline’s first European route expansion in 25 years

EVA Air will launch nonstop flights between Taipei and two popular European destinations. It will initiate Milan service on October 25, 2022 and introduce Munich flights on November 3, 2022. The airline will start with two flights a week to Milan and four to Munich. Addition of the Milan and Munich service to current London, Amsterdam, Paris and Vienna gateways will give EVA the best-developed Taiwan – Europe network with the greatest frequency, offering travelers more flexibility on popular routes.

EVA had planned to launch Milan service in February 2020 but the pandemic and associated lockdowns made that impossible. Now, it is moving ahead with service to Italy’s second-most populous city and financial capital. Milan and Munich mark EVA’s first route expansion in the European market in 25 years. EVA currently flies nonstop to Taipei from Paris and Vienna and operates direct flights from London and Amsterdam with one stop in Bangkok. The added service will give business and leisure travelers more itinerary opportunities when they choose to arrive in one city and return from another.
Passengers from Milan and Munich will be able to arrive at Taiwan’s Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) in the early morning and easily connect onward aboard one of EVA’s frequent flights to northeast and southeast Asia, just as those from Paris and Vienna are now. The expanded flight network will position EVA to attract more travelers from Europe who can comfortably and efficiently fly to and from the airline’s main hub in Taiwan to popular destinations throughout Asia. The added routes will also benefit EVA’s long-term development and stability.

The airline will serve the routes with 777-300ERs:

Route Flight No. Frequency Departure Arrival
Taipei-Milan BR95 2.6 21:50 06:15+1
Milan-Taipei BR96 3.7 11:00 06:15+1

EVA Simplifies Checked Bag Allowances

Makes checking luggage easier, eliminates confusion

EVA Air is ending its two-system policy for checked bags, starting on June 23, 2022, making travel easier for passengers. The change ends the weight-based concept EVA has been using for international flights to/from Europe and Oceania and within Asia and increases baggage allowances for passengers on those routes. The airline will apply the piece-based concept for checked luggage on all its flights worldwide, making EVA’s policies consistent with those of its coshare partners and other Star Alliance members. EVA is the first airline in Taiwan to apply piece-concept baggage rules throughout its network. Travelers can learn more about EVA and its checked baggage policies at Flight Information- Checked Baggage – EVA Air | North America (English).
Under the piece concept, passengers booked in Royal Laurel/Premium Laurel/Business Class are allowed two pieces weighing up to 32kg (70lbs) each. Premium Economy and Economy Class passengers can check two pieces that weigh as much as 23kg (50lbs) each.

“We’ve been using two baggage-check systems since we launched our maiden flight, applying the piece concept on transpacific routes to and from the U.S. and Canada and the weight concept for passengers within Asia and to/from Europe and Oceania,” said EVA President Clay Sun. “The piece concept for checked baggage is used by other Star Alliance members and major international airlines worldwide. Our policy change makes it less confusing for passengers to check their luggage and more convenient for those connecting to other airlines. It also enables us to further improve airport and transit services by creating a smoother baggage-check and transfer process globally.”

The weight concept capped the checked baggage allowances for Economy Class passengers to/from Asia, Europe and Oceania at 30kg (66lbs). Comparing that system with one that’s piece-based:

Cabin Weight Concept (Old) Piece Concept

(New)

Royal Laurel / Premium Laurel / Business 40kg (88lbs) 2 pieces, 32kg (70lbs) each
Premium Economy 35kg (77lbs) 2 pieces, 23kg (50lbs) each
Economy 30kg (66lbs) 2 pieces, 23kg (50lbs) each

*The piece concept for passengers to/from the U.S. and Canada is not changing. EVA has slightly adjusted the single-piece weight limit for Premium Economy.

EVA is accompanying its introduction of the new checked baggage policy with special fare family products designed especially for travelers with less baggage. Among them are an all-new Economy Class “Discount” fare available for travel on all routes and an affordable “Basic” fare with a free checked baggage allowance of 23kg (50lbs) on flights within Asia.

EVA’s Infinity MileageLands Diamond, Gold and Silver Card members can receive an allowance for an additional free checked bag, based on membership status. Once the new policy is fully adopted, EVA’s original extra checked bag policy, allowing one piece of luggage that weighs 23kg (50lb) or less and applying to passengers in all cabins, adjusts to one additional bag, based on booking class. Travelers can also use the EVA Prepaid Excess Baggage service and earn a 10 percent discount in the process.

EVA is continually seeking products and practices to create more secure, convenient and comfortable flying experiences for passengers.
As more countries enter a post-pandemic phase, EVA is diligently refining and improving its service quality. As soon as Taiwan lifts its border restrictions and EVA can get back to the business of flying travelers around the globe, passengers will be able to make good use of the new baggage allowances.
