Aims for Net Zero-Carbon Emissions by 2050

EVA Air seriously considers impacts of climate change and begins working now to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050. The Taiwan-based airline made its case for sustainability at the 65th annual conference of the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA), held online and cohosted by EVA. Clay Sun, the airline’s president, also encouraged his industry colleagues to fully commit to reopening travel and gradually reinvigorating the airline industry. EVA was the first Taiwan-based airline to promote the “Green Travel” Carbon Offset Program in 2017. As soon as a passenger buys a ticket on the EVA website, they can go to a dedicated website at https://evaair.co2analytics.com/home and calculate their carbon emissions based on seating class, flight distance and number of passengers in their party. Passengers can also choose to donate equal or optional amounts to support ClimateCare’s international carbon reduction project for “zero-carbon travel.”
“The airline industry contributes 3.5 trillion US dollars to the global economy, generates 88 million jobs and, at the same time, pursues reduced carbon emissions and advances toward sustainability,” said EVA President Clay Sun. “We ask governments worldwide to approve use of sustainable aviation fuels and support alternative energy research and production facilities. We also strongly appeal to all airlines to comply with standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and its Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA). EVA uses the more eco-friendly Boeing 777-300ERs and 787s as the backbone of its operations. It uses Electronic Flight Bags (EFB) fleetwide to replace paper manuals. It saves water and onboard service supplies by being flexible and making adjustments based on flight distance and numbers of passengers. It uses light-weight Unit Load Device (ULD) to increase loading weight substantially. And it has introduced its next generation of flight planning systems, enabling it to simply access the EVA data base to optimize flight routes and fuel requirements. EVA has also further improved its aircraft engine performance and fuel-efficiency by cleaning equipment. In 2020, EVA saved a total of 13,218 tons of fuel, reducing emissions by 41,636 tons of CO2e.

“Reaching for the sky with energy-savings, pursuing efficiency and becoming a leader for environmental protection” is a fundamental goal in every detail of operations and for the entire EVA management team. EVA pays close attention to domestic policies and global actions as it continues to build a comprehensive strategy that will advance reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. EVA urges every airline, government and fuel supplier to make sustainable aviation fuel available to the industry and develop newer technologies needed to support this objective and a sustainable future.
At the recent United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s 26th Conference of the Parties (COP26), leaders representing different countries reached a consensus on addressing weather-related issues and explored ways to reduce greenhouse gas emission to achieve a zero-carbon goal. During the IATA 77th Annual General Meeting in October, airlines agreed on the same goal. EVA has emphasized the importance of this goal internally and pledged willingness to work closely with global organizations, in addition to putting its own plans into action to achieve the goal.

Enhanced Cabin comfort, environmentally friendly technologies
The Boeing 787 is equipped with an advanced air filtration system that improves cabin air. The 787 fuselage is made of a combination of composite materials that make it more airtight. Compared with other commercial jets, the 787’s cabin humidity can be increased as much as three-to-four times, eliminating the drying inflight atmosphere. The aircraft’s cabin pressure can also be controlled to make the altitude feel like the optimal 6,000 ft. instead of the standard 8,000 ft., boosting passengers’ blood-oxygen levels and reducing headaches and fatigue. Newly designed engine housings significantly reduce noise and give passengers quieter, more comfortable inflight environments.

Technologies used to build the Boeing 787 Dreamliner make the aircraft more environmentally efficient. It is constructed of lighter composite materials such as carbon fibre and more than 50% of the aircraft’s total weight comes from these materials, including the fuselage, wings and engine blades. Compared to traditional aluminium alloy fuselage construction, these advanced materials significantly decrease the aircraft’s overall weight and likelihood of metal fatigue or corrosion, reducing maintenance costs. Replacing fluorescent tubes with LED lights shrinks power demand by almost half.

GE’s advanced GEnx engines reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by 20%, compared to power systems on traditional wide-body aircraft. The 787-9’s high fuel efficiencies and range capabilities equip EVA to further enhance operational performances.
